CHINA SKY HAS A NEW RELEASE "ONE LIFE"!

China Sky features Detroit in new music video, new album due in February

International recording artists China Sky have released "One Life", a new music video featuring shots of iconic Detroit landmarks. The band will be releasing its first album of all new material since 1988 this February on UK-based label Escape Music.

Lead vocalist Ron Perry, a Detroit native, (who some may remember from Detroit 80's punk/metal band "The Nasties") dishes on the video and the new record: "As a kid growing up in Detroit, all my musical influences were artists that were from here. The first record I ever bought was "Smokin' In The Boys Room" by Brownsville Station. People like Seger, Nugent, and the MC5 all figured very prominently in my musical education, so for the video to include shots of the city that made me the musician that I am, and the city that I will always call home, was a no-brainer.

The concept is simple: I'm watching old tapes of the band, and decide that I'm going to go rejoin the group. Being a musician, of course I don't have a car, so I just start walking to Hollywood. The house I walk out of is the actual house I grew up in. From there I walk through downtown Detroit past the Ren-Cen and the giant fist, and continue across the country until I reach the Hollywood soundstage where I join with the band after 25 years. I thought it was a fitting analogy for the incredible journey we have been through".

China Sky's 1988 debut album has become something of a cult classic in recent years, prompting the reunion. Perry explains: "I was contacted by Escape Music about re-forming the band, and at first I thought it was a joke. I couldn't believe that people were still interested after all this time, but after taking two years to think about it, I called my old bandmate Richard Smith, who was not only receptive to a reunion, but was quite excited by the prospect.

At that point we decided that we had to surround ourselves with the best musicians available. One of the things that people seemed to like about the first China Sky album was the guitar work, and this time around, our new guitarist Steve Wheeler definitely kicks it up a notch or ten. He plays in a classic style, but in almost every solo, he throws in an unexpected twist that makes you turn your head and say "Wait…what was that"?

Fans of tasteful rock guitar shredding will love him. He never wastes a note, and I think he has raised the bar for melodic rock guitarists". Our drummer, Bruce Crump, was the original drummer in southern rock band Molly Hatchet. The guy played drums on "Flirtin' With Disaster"! 'Nuff said. Scottish keyboardist Tim McGowan is living proof that "If it's not Scottish, it's crap".

"In my opinion, the new album is much stronger than the first and definitely rocks a little harder. The lyrics have more depth, and the tracks are more thought out and dynamic. The new lineup is pure magic, and I can't wait to bring the band to Detroit"!

DETROIT BAND: THE SUNDAY FUNNIES!

The Sunday Funnies were inducted into the "Michigan Rock & Roll Legends Hall of Fame" June 2017

One of my favorite local bands that played around Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor was the Sunday Funnies. My gang of girls loved to dance to their fun tunes. We never missed them when they played nearby.

Kim I hope ya get this email -

Was checking out your site Motorcity Music Archives and hope it's your site - lol (It's not mine it's Mike Krawczyk's LOL)

Just wanted to let you know all Sunday Funnies members are still alive but that includes me the drummer that took over for Richard Mitchel - Mitchel recorded the 45 for Hideout records and then the two albums for RareEarth and then left the band right after that early 1972.

I was a drummer friend of Mitchel's and Fidge and Aitken too - we all grew up together from the same neighborhood - anyways - we all stayed together till January 1st, 1975. We also had guitarist Gary Quackenbush (SRC) from middle of 1973 to the end.

Sad to say that years later Richard Mitchel ended up homeless and died in a halfway house in Detroit during the 90's.

I'm sending this and hope ya get it - you might want to get rid of the question marks on the page you have up for the Sunday Funnies... I'll ask Mike to zap the question marks for you guys ok?
with respect too - Rosco 63

FUNKY D RECORDS TO PRODUCE DETROIT'S LONGNECK STRANGLER!

There’s no simple way to label Longneck Stranglers’ sound. Their grungy, sometimes psychedelic, guitar riffs paired with hard-hitting drums and that good ‘ole southern harmonica yield a rockabilly-roots rock that would be just as at home at a honky tonk as it would in a grimy hole-in-the-wall in downtown Detroit.

Their hodge-podge style is no happy accident but is very likely the product of the boys’ hometown of Hazel Park, Michigan - aptly dubbed “Hazeltucky” because of the several residents, transplants from Kentucky, that brought with them their love for southern music. Pair that with the influence of neighboring Detroit Rock City and you’ve got Longneck Strangler.

As lead singer, Ricky Lentz, explains, “We’re at a crossroads where fans of both rock and country can meet.” Although they frequent the festival scene, at their core Longneck Strangler is the great American bar band.

Their name is, in fact, a euphemism for drinking a beer. A name that became so associated with grabbin’ a cold one that the boys have their own limited edition brew for fans to “strangle.” Give one listen to their upcoming full-length album, Home (release date 12/12/2014), to see how far the boys have come since their first EP, My First Rodeo, in 2007.

Guitarist Rick Browarski, the predominant songwriter of the band, writes his best stuff when pulling from real life, and there’s no doubt this album is shaded by mature themes like family and real love, while keeping just enough of those rambunctious beer-bar tunes the band was founded on.

Lentz’s deep, pure baritone vocals, ooze from the speakers, creamy as velvet, with moments of contradictory gruffness that are only more alluring, like a recently-shaved beard on an otherwise smooth face. The rest of the band, including drummer Jeremy Kanouse and bassist Kevin Davis, form the backbone of the music, delivering gospel-tinged blues, Opry-licious Americana, beer-soaked ballads and everything in between.

“We’re a country band that plays rock and we’re a rock band that plays country,” Browarski said. We’ve always been neither and both.” Longneck Strangler sit comfortably at their crossroads, a genre-spanning group, that can relate to fans on both sides of the tracks. When struggling to define their sound, just call them American music.

We got a cool message today from Ex-Junk Monkey David Bierman! From David:

Long story (mostly) short:
I was lead singer of Detroit’s Junk Monkeys, a sorta seminal alty-rock band that released several albums in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s. Signed to Metal Blade/Warner Bros along with Goo Goo Dolls in the ‘Great Modern Rock Roundup of 1990.’ Put out a handful of albums that were loved among a too-small handful of people. Toured and toured and toured some more.

Stopped for a long list of reasons in 1994.

Started writing songs again last year, and gathered a great band to help me out. The result is the new album, ‘Standard Skies.’

David Bierman Overdrive
David Bierman – Vocals, Guitar
Jim Faulkner - Drums (Blueflowers, Beggars)
David Feeny - Pedal Steel, Organ (Loretta Lynn, American Mars, Blanche)

MISSING BOOTSEY X: STORY FROM GERALD SHOHAN

Even though he’s been gone for a year now, don’t think any of his fans and friends will ever forget Bootsey X! I’ve spent some time on Youtube the last few days thinking I would add a one of the video’s of Bootsey X and the Lovemasters along with this picture.

The trouble is, I couldn’t decide which one. Like most of you know, not every show is the brightest star in your universe. Should it be one that reminds me of the time we had that night, or a song that everyone wanted us to play.

I watched one that had both Bootsey and Steve King, both of which left us this past year. Instead of rambling on, I’d just like to say during this holiday season, how thankful I am to have been a part of the life and times of these guys, and thank all of you for being there for us.
Feel free to post or like your favorite tune or moment. THANK YOU GERALD

GUITAR LEGEND PETER BANKS THE MARS TAPES!

Rare Recordings By Guitar Legend Peter Banks 'The Mars Tapes' Now Available!

London, UK – Much to the excitement of prog fans worldwide, rare recordings of guitar legend Peter Banks, best known for his work with YES and FLASH, is now available on GONZO Multimedia! Peter Banks Empire 'The Mars Tapes' (2-CD set) represents Empire lll in rehearsal at Mars Studios in Los Angeles in 1979. The band had set up camp at Mars Studios for six months rehearsing and showcasing their music, much of which has been unheard until this release. The band basically recorded every thing they did off the board, tape hiss and all.

Peter Banks (RIP 2013) and Sidonie Jordan, who not only co-wrote, but fronted the band with her powerful vocals, founded Empire in the early to mid-seventies after Peter’s FLASH endeavors and attracted artists such as Phil Collins. Peter and Phil had joined forces in a band called 'Zok And The Radar Boys' which was pre-Empire for Peter, and pre-Brand X for Phil. “Sky At Night” (bonus track) features Phil Collins on drums and backing vocals and Jon Giblin on bass and is testimony of their collaboration.

Sidonie Jordan, who has an extensive list of music credentials to her name, including a diversified solo career as a staff writer/recording artist for A&M Records, and has recorded for other labels such as Capital Records, Electra Records and Trojan Records. (Her song and recording of ‘All God’s Mornings’ was produced by Peter Townshend and featured on his ‘With Love’ album. Sidonie is currently producing and writing with Jez Larder owner of Skyline Studios in Sunbury- On-Thames UK, and Empire lll drummer, Mark Murdock, more recently known for his 'Cymbalic Encounters’ release featuring members from Brand X, agreed to release these recordings as a dedication to the memory of Peter Banks and his great contribution to progressive rock music.

Says Sidonie, “ 'The Mars Tapes' were recorded live at Mars Studios in Los Angles during the summer of 1979! And include a few tracks that never appeared on any Empire albums. As with all the Empire incarnations this album features the amazing talent and skill of Peter Banks, who has been called the Architect of Progressive Rock.”

Drummer Mark Murdock explains, “The Peter Banks Empire ship set sail against the ever-changing music world, and was uncompromising in producing a range of material with Peter Banks' 'Signature Guitar Sound and Style,' while incorporating themes of the time period in which the band existed and also reliving the past by playing songs from the early Empire catalog and even a YES version of ‘Something’s Coming.’ There are various tracks on ‘The Mars Tapes’ that also represented a ‘Work In Progress,’ which were both instrumental and vocal orientated. Empire was anticipating to make some big waves in the music scene, but the waves never reached the shore- until now!”

THE RETURN OF MADAM X!

“We had no idea what to expect when we hit the stage. It had been almost 30 years since we played together. We new this could be either the end, or the new beginning.” The Petrucci sisters,

Bret Kaiser (Vocals)
Maxine Petrucci (Guitar)
Chris "GODZILLA" Doliber (Bass)
 Roxy Petrucci (Drums)

FROM JACKIE WALLACE:

Like many people, I love to hear a good comeback story. I had the opportunity to meet with the band members of Madam X. Their journey was and continues to be a fascinating one. This is a story within many stories they have to tell…

Going Against the Norm…

Madam X was formed in the late 1970’s /early 1980’s by two sisters from Detroit, Maxine and Roxy Petrucci. The two girls were into heavy metal music. Maxine played guitar, and Roxy played drums. They were not your typical high school girls. They didn’t hang out in dress shops, or go to school dances. Instead, their free time was spent playing music and hanging out in music stores. Their obvious obsession with music made them somewhat of misfits among the high school student body, even though they had both earned music scholarships to Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

Maxine and Roxy had auditioned many musicians for their band before they finalized their lineup, which included Chris Doliber on bass and Bret Kaiser on vocals. After a year of gigging every night in Detroit, the foursome packed up and left for New York. They had no plans on how they were going to survive; they just knew their ultimate goal was to be in California and have a record deal, so the how didn’t matter.

The Gritty Road…

There is no better way to describe their early years of work other then to call it gritty. The word “gritty” means “having strong qualities of uncompromising realism,” and that just about summarizes their journey early on. With little income, the foursome lived the life of “starving artists.” When they weren’t sleeping in their vehicles on tour, they slept on the floors of roach infested motels. They would take turns going to eat at cheap buffet restaurants, paying for one meal and then sneaking food back for the other members to eat. The band had a grueling schedule of performing every night which gradually led to a loyal following of metal heads. They had no manager, no marketing team, and no money. They did all the bookings, promoting, and negotiating, themselves.

Chance Encounter…

After building a following in New York, and elsewhere, they scheduled a tour that included their ultimate destination, California. They booked a show at the Troubadour Nightclub in Las Angeles. After their performance, which ended at about midnight, they were approached by a woman who introduced herself as an agent in the music business. The woman suggested that the band go to the venue next door, called the Rainbow Room, to mingle.

The Rainbow Room was the hangout for major national bands such as Motley Crue, Poison, Alice Cooper, and many others. With some hesitation, the band decided to go check it out. As they walked into the venue, their “larger then life” hairstyles caught the attention of everyone in the room, including one of the A&R representatives from Jet Records. The A&R representative asked them who they were and the band introduced themselves. He then asked for a promo pack. Luckily, the band was always prepared and gave him one. Within a week after, the band received a call from Jet Records asking where they were playing next.

Preparation…

The audience at their next gig included, the president of Jet Records, Don Arden. The band performed with their usual level of passion, energy and integrity to their music. Immediately after their performance, Don Arden told them their lives were about to change. He offered to sign Madam X to Jet Records that night.

Shattered Dreams….

After the initial explosion of excitement from getting signed, the band quickly began settling into the realization that they were no longer in control of their destiny. They had to adjust and conform to having little creative control. They were under the impression that being signed to a record label meant things were going to happen quickly and on a big scale. The problem was Madam X had already made things happen quickly and big, without any help. Their level of speed was much greater than what a label could offer them.

Hence, began the negativity with the label and then within the band. Eventually, both the band and the label were dealing with separate as well as some mutual issues that caused the band to break up and the label to dissolve. At this point, the members were emotionally drained, and their energy was depleted. They walked away from the Madam X experience and all went their separate ways. Each member continued to pursue music, Maxine started her own band called Maxine; Roxy became the drummer for the popular all female metal band, Vixen; Bret began his own band called Band ’56; and Chris continued to play bass and write music.

As the Years Go By…

Aside from getting back together in 1991 for one show, the band had little or no contact after the break up. Some 28 years later, while on tour in England with the Vixen band, Roxy was at a “meet and greet,” signing autographs after her gig. She found herself repeatedly answering questions about Madam X and also signing Madam X paraphernalia. Roxy realized that although the members of Madam X had moved on, their loyal fans did not.

Roxy contacted Maxine, Brett, and Chris to share her experience and suggested they get together to write and record one song. With the help of producer Kevin Sharpe of Metro 37 Studio, the band reunited and began working on one song to release. As word got out, via social media, the band found that their fans were waiting with excitement. They were contacted by one of the founders of The Sweden Rock Festival, the biggest festival in Sweden, and invited them to perform at the 2014 festival.

The Comeback…

With some reservation, the band agreed to do the show. When they arrived in Sweden, they were interviewed by on one of the local magazines, who asked them if they had any idea how big they were in Sweden. The band had no idea. The moments before the show, as the band walked toward the stage, they described the halls leading up to the stage as a “maze” with tall walls so that you couldn’t see out. They described being somewhat nervous, hoping that maybe at least a couple hundred people would show up.

“We had no idea what to expect when we hit the stage. It had been almost 30 years since we played together. We knew this could be either the end of Madam X, or the new beginning.”

Once they hit the stage and saw the “sea of heads,” a crowd of about 20,000 fans, chanting for them, they were overwhelmed. The band portrayed the experience as being “surreal” and “invigorating.” As they began playing, “the nerves settled and it felt like home,” as Roxy put it. At one point, during their performance of their song, High in High School, Bret pointed the microphone at the audience and the band listened to the crowd sing all the words to the song they wrote some 30 years ago. This moment proved that this was, in fact, the new beginning for Madam X!

The Next Chapter…

The band is now recording a new CD with Kevin Sharpe at Metro37 Studio. They have plans to release the CD with a big comeback party right here in Detroit, where it all started. They hired an agent and are planning on a tour in the summer of 2015.

It is amazing how the universe works. When the time is right, and the dream is big enough, the universe will bring it back around.

Welcome back Madam X!

ROGER MCGUINN COMING TO ANN ARBOR MAY 2015

ANN ARBOR, Michigan - The Ark presents An Evening with Roger McGuinn , Saturday, May 16 at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. Show time is 8:00 pm.

A founding member of the pioneering 1960's folk-rock band, The Byrds , Roger McGuinn was inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, along with fellow band members David Crosby and Chris Hillman.

His distinguished vocals and rich, melodic guitar style turned songs like "Turn Turn Turn," "Eight Miles High" and "Mr. Tambourine Man" into Top Ten hits and cemented his place in rock and roll history.

The Byrds combined the melodic, upbeat pop of the Beatles with the message-oriented lyrics of Bob Dylan to create a new amalgam that would become known as folk-rock. They, in turn, served as a huge influence on the Eagles, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and later R.E.M.

Reserved seats are $39.50 and $25 (limited Gold Circle also available) and go on sale at ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster outlets on Friday, November 14 at 10:00 am. Charge by phone at 800-745-3000.

WE ARE THE LEAGUE...UN-CUT!

Notorious UK82 Punk Favorites, Anti-Nowhere League, Revisit Their Classic Debut Album!

We Are The League…Uncut! Contains Their Most Popular Anthems Including “I Hate People,” “For You” & Metallica’s Favorite “So What” As Well As Bonus Cuts!

Los Angeles, CA - Anti-Nowhere League will cap off a triumphant 2014 of touring with the release of an LP containing newly recorded versions of their debut album We Are The League. Never heard before, the complete We Are The League album using the original lyrics will be released by Cleopatra Records on October 28. This new release recreates exactly how the album was written before being confiscated, and has never been put together in its entirety since 1982 including the infamous “So What”.

Formed in Turnbridge Wells, England in 1980, Anti-Nowhere League roared to underground popularity with the 1981 release of their debut single, a cover of Ralph McTell’s “Streets of London”, (dragged through the gutter in fine style, of course) backed with “So What”, a track deemed so offensive by the Metropolitan Police's Obscene Publication Squad, that the record distributor’s warehouse was raided and all copies were seized. The League managed to recover from the heavy censoring hand of the law and release their debut LP We Are The League, the next year, although minus “So What” as well as the original lyrics of “Animal” and other tracks.

As lead singer Animal states, “This recording is a lyrical journey through the 80’s, re-recorded in the 21st century using the very original lyrics that the law tried to stop. We didn’t participate in being nice….we wanted nothing from greed and gluttony except to point a middle finger or two at how absurd the country had become”.

Now with a tight, road tested, solid lineup, these songs are given a true presentation as they were intended. All other versions have been rehashed! This is ... WE ARE THE LEAGUE UN-CUT!

1. We Are The League
2. Can’t Stand Rock N’ Roll
3. Animal
4. I Hate People
5. Nowhere Man
6. Woman
7. Streets Of London
8. Wreck A Nowhere
9. Snowman
10. World War III
11. Let’s Break The Law
12. We Will Not Remember You
13. So What

A self-portrait of artist Gottfried Helnwein is featured on the cover of the album.

VICTOR PERAINO'S KINGDOM COME: NEW LP JOURNEY IN TIME

Victor Peraino

Victor Peraino and the new Kingdom Come extend to you a cosmic greeting...

A native of Detroit (the “Motor City”), Victor’s initiation into the music scene was as a drummer for the UP, a sister band of the legendary MC5, both managed by John Sinclair. The gigs at Detroit’s Grande Ballroom were happening and the UP played an important part of that scene as support for such acts as The Stooges, Cream, Amboy Dukes, Janis Joplin, and Soft Machine.

The UP Gary Rasmussen,Victor Peraino, Frank Bach, Bob Rasmussen

Victor made his departure from the UP and traveled to England in the 70s. As fate would have it, he met Arthur Brown..

Live Performance: Motor City Music Factory 2013

Victor began touring with Arthur across Europe. Their stage performances and theatrics, in addition to their musical collaborations with such artists as Genesis, Eno, Bob Calvert, Hawkwind, and Edgar Broughton, are now considered legendary. This era of the psychedelic/progressive scene is regarded by many as its Stellar Age.

In the 70's they recorded on Polydor Records in England. Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come "Journey" was critically acclaimed as a landmark, in the music industry the first recording to feature a drum machine.

Victor played keyboards. mellotron. moog synthesizer, vcs3, theremin & vocals on this ground-breaking album. He also worked with such notable artists as Queen, Manfred Mann, Dave Edmunds, Brian Eno, Daevid Allen of Gong, Hawkwind and The Edgar Broughton Band.

 Victor Peraino and Arthur Brown

After Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come disintegrated following the release of the wonderful "Journey",Album US keyboard player Victor Peraino retained the name, releasing No Man's Land in '75 under the name Victor Peraino's Kingdom Come, reissued by Black Widow in 2010.

After years, Victor and Arthur decided to collaborate again, resurrecting the project Kingdom Come. In this new musical adventure and CD "Journey In Time" reproduce in a new guise, some of the best songs included in "No Man's Land" (Demon of Love, Sun Sets Sail, Empires of Steel).

They take up the theme of the wonderful "Time Captives" from "Journey" turning it into a cross-section sidereal enriched by the magnificence of space keyboards, revitalize ina progressive key two old classics like "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "I Put a Spell On You "...

but they also offer some brand new compositions (We Only Come to Help You, Future, the title track, Walk with Angels) deploying an odyssey of lovely sounds, underpinned by the omnipresent as ever presence of Mellotron, Moog, VCS3, in an uninterrupted flow of emotions.
