CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE ROCK N ROLL KIND!

Eddie Kramer (R) and myself in Los Angeles, July 2015

By Bruce Nazarian

It seems funny how certain people in your life pop up every now and again...

It’s been that way with me and Eddie Kramer ever since we first met while I was part of Brownsville station recording the “Red Album” in Mount Kisco New York

Eddie and I forged a fast friendship during the weeks we spent recording. There's something about that Producer/Artist relationship that is magical (IF you don't wind up hating each other).

I developed a tremendous amount of respect for his abilities as a music producer and recording engineer, and learned many lessons from him during that time that I have used to this very day!

But after we packed up our guitars and the Record Plant mobile truck drove away, and we all went our separate ways after those sessions, it seemed like every now and again Eddie and I were destined to run across each other!

The first time was on a transcontinental American Airlines flight from New York to LA a number of years back

Years later I ran across him at the 2011 Winter NAMM show in Anaheim, CA – Eddie was at the Waves booth, talking about his signature signal processing plug-ins

And last night it happened again!

One of the things I love about living in Los Angeles is that it is still arguably one of the main hubs of the music industry on the face of the planet; and because of that, you never know who’s going to be in town when and where you’re likely to cross their path - and that was the case last night – at a local pro audio watering hole that I like to frequent (RSPE), Eddie Kramer was the featured speaker in a seminar regarding some new digital audio technology from Waves.

Imagine my surprise as I get off the elevator to sign in and look to my left and there in all of his glory, and I do mean glory, was none other than my dear friend and former producer…

I looked at Eddie, Eddie looked at me and we both had a huge embrace as befits the fact that we hadn’t seen each other for probably about four years now and were genuinely enthusiastic to see each other again

But the best part about this particular encounter was that we had an opportunity to chat for a while before Eddie did his presentation, and during that chat we had the chance to revisit many of the wonderful things about the crazy wild days when Brownsville Station invaded Mount Kisco New York to record The Red Album at The Cenacle.

The Legendary "Red Album" from Brownsville Station

Eddie introduced me to his assistant engineer Scott, and to his “F-Pedals” business partner Francesco and asked that I regale them with stories about the Cenacle sessions – apparently because no one can believe this place exists unless you’ve actually been there!

Well we chatted for a while about this and that and I did my very best to explain the inexplicable to Eddie's friends – namely, that the Cenacle was this amazing countryside mansion surrounded by wonderfully lush green acres and situated in an idyllic little piece of paradise just north of Manhattan.

And then we got to telling stories about the recording sessions for Brownsville!

Eddie was kind enough to offer, completely unsolicited, that he thought the guitar playing on that album was sensational. And I kind of blush I guess cause that's pretty high praise coming from someone who has worked with many of the greatest rock 'n' roll guitar gods in the pantheon (Hendrix, Page, you name it) .

I returned the favor and told him that (Lady) Put the Light On was probably one of the finest vocal performances I had ever recorded, and it was entirely his producing chops that coaxed it out of me…

And then we got to talking about The Martian Boogie…

I could tell by the smile on his face that he had exactly the same wonderful recollection of those recording sessions that we in the band had from back in the day!

Martian Boogie was an inspired piece of musical lunacy (I wrote about this in an earlier post here), but apparently that musical lunacy had not only infected the band,  but I guess the extraterrestrial nature of it all also seeped through the microphone cables and up into the control room of the Record Plant remote truck parked outside, and into the ears of Eddie Kramer

Like I said, I could tell from the smile on his face and he had the same fond recollection that I did.  I think we both have realized that all those years ago, we were part of the creation of a little pice of rock history! When I told him that the 1977 Brownsville Station album on Private Stock Records had unfortunately been lost to time and the Masters could not be found or properly licensed for reissue on CD, he was crestfallen (so was I, BTW).

I suspect that in the midst of all of the top shelf projects that Eddie’s done (Zeppelin Hendrix, Kiss, Beatles, you name it) he may be harboring one small little hidden spot of laughter and satisfaction that somewhere along the line in 1977 Eddie Kramer and the boys from Ann Arbor (Brownsville Station) crossed paths in Mount Kisco, New York and helped the Martians invade America!

Hope you enjoy reading this reminiscence much as I did writing it – it was really great seeing Eddie after all these years!  I wonder when the next time will be that our paths will cross?

I’ll bet it will be next year at the NAMM show in Anaheim, CA - perhaps I’ll see some of you there!

GUITARIST GARY HOEY AT CALLAHANS JULY 17

Auburn Hills, MI. – One of the top 100 guitarists of all time! The world-renowned rocker and guitar aficionado takes on the Blues with his latest album, Deja Blues! Gary will also be performing songs from his latest release, “Deja Blues,” available now on Wazoo Music Group. “This is an album of original blues songs I’ve wanted to record for a long time.

The Blues has always been near and dear to my heart. I have so much respect for it. When I’m recording a blues song, it’s a 5 minute journey and you can’t take a breath, you can’t keep punching in the recording button to fix stuff or it loses the vibe.”

At sixteen, Hoey often lingered outside Boston's renowned Berklee College of Music making friends and offering to pay for lessons. To devote more of his time to music, the prodigy would cut high school classes so that he could hone his guitar playing skills all the while playing Boston's local clubs and teaching guitar to avoid a day job and keep the guitar in his hand

Hoey’s first break came in 1987 when Ozzy Osbourne showed up in Boston looking for a guitarist. Osborne liked Hoey’s tape enough to fly him to LA for an audition. The gig went to Zakk Wylde but Ozzy suggested Hoey move to LA seeing his talent. He took Ozzy's advice and with $17,000 he saved from teaching Hoey loaded the U-Haul and drove across country to LA. In 1992 Hoey released "Heavy Bones" on Warner Bros. a rock vocal album with Frankie Banali on drums from Quiet Riot.

Heavy Bones got caught in the grunge backlash and the album went unnoticed with a million dollar debt after album cost, promotion and video the band got dropped. 1993 Hoey asked Warner Bros. if he could record a low budget album for fun of instrumental rock. He recorded the successful "Animal Instinct" album ($15,000 budget) which included a cover of the Focus hit, "Hocus Pocus".

Not only did the hit rocket into the Billboard Top 5, outpacing all other singles as the most frequently played rock song of the year, but the album went on to reach classic rock notoriety. With a collection of 19 albums it's no wonder Gary Hoey is listed as one of the top 100 guitarists of all time.

1994 Hoey scored the successful “Endless Summer II” soundtrack and had another radio hit with War's "Low Rider." Other film clients have included Walt Disney films, ESPN, New Line Cinema, scoring the music to "California Screaming" (Disney Roller Coaster), as well as songs placed in movies such as "Office Space," "Deck the Halls” (Danny Devito), and Beethoven III.

Recently, Hoey produced and co-wrote The Queen Of Metal Lita Ford’s latest release “Living Like Runaway” for SPV records to rave reviews. “It was a thrill to work with Lita… She is a true rocker and a pioneer for woman in rock. And lastly, she’s a kick ass guitar player”.

To this day the guitar aficionado continues to tour extensively, endorsing Fender guitars and Amp, Monster cable, GHS Strings, Rocktron to name a few. He has been involved with the Rock n Roll Fantasy Camp as music director to include his stint at “Campalooza 2013 in NYC jammin' with legends like shred-maestro Yngwie Malmsteen, blues icon Johnny Winter, Robben Ford, the time-honored rocker Leslie West of Mountain and co-founding member of KISS Peter Criss.

Hoey has toured and traded licks with the likes of Jeff Beck, Brian May of Queen, Joe Bonamassa, Ted Nugent, Joe Satriani, The Doobie Brothers, Foreigner, Styx, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Peter Frampton, and Dick Dale.

THE MAKING OF THE MARTIAN BOOGIE: BROWNSVILLE STATION

So, there was this band from Ann Arbor - you know where that is, right?
Just head west out of the D, on either I-94 or US23 about half an hour, you'll be there.

by Bruce "Beezer" Nazarian - former member of Brownsville Station

From May 1975 to May 1979 I was proud to be a part of this group of musical asylum escapees, called Brownsville Station, and especially proud and honored to have known and been befriended by one Michael "Cub" Koda, the talented lead singer guitarist with the wacky glasses and referee shirts.

Brownsville Station - on Private Stock records - audio masters lost for all time ;-(
Along the way, we hit some extraordinary highs and lows, and ONE of those high points was the recording of the legendary "Red Album" (in official album review speak, the "eponymous" LP called Brownsville Station).

You can look this up on Discogs.com and it will say:
"Recorded at the Cenacle-Mt. Kisco, NY by Record Plant Mobile Studio..."
What is DOESN'T say is how we TOOK OVER the Cenacle during our time there, and how this was nirvana for a bunch of delinquents from A-square - just give 'em a big mansion in New Yawk, the Record Plant Mobile recording truck parked outside in the driveway, and wires and snakes going into literally EVERY room within 200 feet of the truck - this was Recording Paradise!

Anyway, back to "The Martian Boogie" - the subject of our little story herein; this was actually a jam tune and sometime set-closer, the culmination of way too many road shows where we would artfully mix the entire history of American blues into a sexy cocktail of a strong 4/4 backbeat (thanks to H-Bomb). screamin' guitars, and whatever song we did for an encore that night!

Yours truly in the studio at Cenacle, 1977
As Cub said on BrownsvilleStation.com:
"The Martian Boogie" was a seven-minutes-barn-burning set-closer recorded live in one take, spaceship noises and all. The tune started out as a pastiche of various John Lee Hooker-Junior Parker boogie riffs, then was promptly corrupted into a whole different ball of wax when the band was stuck in a hotel room in Canada watching a lousy sci-fi movie called Not Of This Earth. By the time we recorded the version, It was  road-tested classic that we were sure was going to be our next hit, even bigger than “Smokin”
Well, Cubmaster, that might have been JUST a little bit of an exaggeration, but all is forgiven. As I recall today, "Martian" was recorded with the entire band tracking - Michael on Bass, Cub & I on guitars, H-Bomb on Drums. I forget now what exact notion got into our heads about WHY we though this would be a perfectly amazing addition to an otherwise rockin set of originals and loving remakes -  oh yeah - I remember now - it was a SMASH live tune - and we wanted to record it for posterity. So we decided to do it, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Brownsville boys doing their famous line dance during "Martian"

A little inside info - the actual track we recorded (all in one live take, as I recall) starts when Henry hits the intro drum fill on the record (this is actually about 54 seconds into the full 7 minute track). The entire 54 seconds leading up to the explosion and drum fill was carefully crafted by little ole me, on my trusty ARP 2600 synthesizer... and, boy howdy - THAT took a lot of time!

When you listen to the track,  the LEFT rhythm guitar is me, the RIGHT rhythm guitar is Cub. First solo is me on slide - LIVE, second solo is Cub - LIVE.

After the solos, we did the track just like we would do it live - Cub was doing the spoken bit while I kept the guitar rhythm comp going.   Cub did the guitar solo after "Boogiein' Capital of the USA", Michael and I joined on vocals when we hit the harmony parts, and from 6:20 on the track becomes pure SONIC MAYHEM.

One thing about this tune - it NEVER failed to kick ass live - just like it was supposed to ;-)

I have many wonderful recollections from the years spent with BrownSta - but perhaps none is better than the time the Martians landed in Mt. Kisco, New York - at Cenacle - with Martian cigarettes - and we captured it LIVE (pretty much) in the studio - in all of its kickass glory ;-)

By the way - big credit to our crew - Lurch, Philly Joe Lower, and Donn Nelson, for keeping us all out of jail, and special thanks to the "unexpected assistant engineer" Rod O'Brien, who I met again ten years later, and continues as a close friend to this day. Rod knows the story about Eddie Kramer and my switchblade, but we're not tellin' ;-)  Hats off to Eddie Kramer, who managed to get one of my best vocal performances EVER, when he recorded "Lady Put The Light On". You rock, KranMar.

and finally - here's to you Cub -
a great musician, a great musicologist, and a great friend until his dying day.

GARY QUACKENBUSH SRC LEAD GUITARIST HAD DIED

Sad news to hear that amazingly gifted guitarist Gary Quackenbush passed away this past weekend . Gary was the original and most fabulous guitarist of the band Scot Richard Case aka SRC.

SRC's first hit record...

Scott Richard Case aka SRC was formed by Scott Richardson, the Chosen Few lead singer, with Gary's band, The Fugitives, which featured his brother Glenn Quackenbush & E.G. Clawson, and Robin Dale, Bass & Vocals, the only British member of the group. Jeep Holland, manager of The Rationals, became their manager.

We had the lovely opportunity to watch Quack in action and up close when we filmed him in 2010 in a small rehearsal studio in Ann Arbor. With Chris Taylor, Al King and Mark Sisto. This was a spontaneous session with no rehearsal..but what a joy for me to watch...

Gary's unique style influenced legions of young guitarists and his signature style lives on...
Our condolences go out to his family and many friends....RIP Quack

Gary Quackenbush is survived by brother, Glenn, of New Hudson; sister, Martha Leabu, of Brighton; and 10 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be private. The family asks that donations be sent to the Hospice of Lenawee, 1903 Wolf Creek Highway, Adrian, Michigan.

SWEET CRYSTAL "QUAD" REVIEWS AND NEWS

Pretty sweet to see how Sweet Crystal's latest EP "QUAD" is making it's way across the planet...and making reviewers sit up and take notice. Check out some of these quotes:

G. Kleinbloesem, Strutter'Zine (Netherlands):

"...the legendary Christian Classic Rock/AOR band Sweet Crystal returns with a new album titled Quad. The band still sounds fresh and clean in 2015 with a melodic rock/aor sound in the classic Petra/Sweet Comfort Band/Allies/White Heart style and surprisingly they have some great guest singers this time, namely Amy Susan Heard and David Perez. Amy is a wonderful female singer and let's hope on a future release she will sing more, because the track on which she sings, Some People May Ask, is a lovely uptempo classic 80s AOR tune with catchy melodies. Another highlight is the Kayak/Magnum ish epic semi prog/pomp piece Anthem, which instrumental sounds like a classic."

T. Rogen, Equal Ground "Indie Album Reviews":
"QUAD is a five-song EP that demands your attention…it’s intense...”Foot of The Cross” is an interesting mix of ballad and arena rock. I appreciated the guitar solo and some of the classic moves like the pick scratch against the strings. “Some People May Ask” was tailor made to be in a play. I’m talking about a huge Broadway play where people are doing somersaults and fifty people are singing...This song should be played in an arena, one of those mega churches or Carnegie Hall...I don’t go to church regularly (if ever) but if I did I would hope that Sweet Crystal was there to rock my socks off first thing in the morning."

D.C. Hathaway, "D.C. Coast To Coast" (San Diego, CA, USA):
"Nobody spreads the gospel musically quite like Sweet Crystal whose rocking melodies compliment the message that ALWAYS grabs me and lifts MY soul. Their EP QUAD is NO exception to their past releases, but even BETTER! It’s so refreshing to hear loud rock music that REALLY means something. I’m a fan forever and SO blessed Sweet Crystal is part of the family on the D.C. Coast To Coast playlist.”

A. Rockwell, Angelic Warlord (Phoenix, AZ, USA):
"All of the Detroit, Michigan based Sweet Crystal’s chief qualities - AOR and commercial hard rock leanings, soaring lead vocals, tightly woven guitar harmonies and radio friendly catchy hooks - are present on its independently released spring of 2015 five song EP Quad. Quad from featuring near perfect production that aligns a presence fill low-end with guitars, keyboards and vocals in just the right amounts.

Polish is of the type connoisseurs expect form and AOR meets melodic hard rock album. Credit the group in this capacity for recruiting mixing technician Chuck Alkazian (Pearl Sound Studios) and mastering engineer Scott Hull (Masterdisc)- the results speak for themselves!

First full length track “Foot Of The Cross” proves an excited groove laden hard rocker, as an arresting bass line and added traces of organ collide to establish nothing less a climactic scene. Instrumental moments find searing guitar feedback and razor edged soloing holding sway. As always, frontman Marq Speck proves a natural fit for the genre at hand with his signature raspy to melodic middle register vocal qualities.

Sweet Crystal goes full-bore symphonic progressive rock on “Anthem”, a direction in which we have never previously heard from the group. Classical instrumentation and guitar harmonies open the first two instrumental moments, with the lone verse that ensues giving way to a final instrumental interlude that closes things in magnanimous fashion (and suggests of prime Kansas in the process). All the while angelic choir vocals lend to the glorious feel at hand. ...if a long term fan or into any type of AOR, melodic rock or commercial hard rock then Quad comes strongly recommended."

Anyway, you get the picture...QUAD appears to be doing just fine...and of course it's because of you and your support that we keep on with the music and the message. Got QUAD? Here are some links to use to grab one for yourself...and your parents...and your kids...and that guy next door who could really use some Sonshine in his life!

GO WEST: THE BOSS MUSTANGS

The Richter Scale reported that the west side of Michigan felt a rare 4.2 earthquake Saturday afternoon as The Boss Mustangs threw down their final show in Hudsonville, MI. Coincidence? I think not. These fuzzy fellas have been kicking down some of the most powerful live sets that you have ever seen, and why not go out with a literal earthquake that was felt throughout the Midwest?

Formed by Mastermind and exceptionally talented guitarist/songwriter Mickey Catalina in 2009, The Boss Mustangs released their self titled debut album on Spinout Records in 2011 (and an extended release on Rotoscope Records in 2013).

Like many bands, they had some line-up changes.  I have only seen their current four piece; Dan Cadillac (vocals), Mickey Catalina (guitar), Hyde DeSoto (bass), J. Edsel Hoover (drums).

I was a bit late to the game.  I discovered these guys in late 2011.  Ann Arbor and pockets of SE Michigan had just been through a very dark period.  The asexual indie rock/folk scene dominated all areas of the country, and Ann Arbor/SE Michigan was not excluded.  I stopped going to live shows, as they turned into one big snoozefest after another.

I lost faith and like so many other music enthusiasts, I needed something to kick my ass all over the place and leave me on my hands and knees, begging for more. In November of 2011, I popped into a really great show at Woodruffs (Ypsilanti) that included Blue Snaggletooth, Lava Moth, Wild Savages and the mighty Boss Mustangs.

The Mustangs offered some crazy freak out Rock ‘n’ Roll Garage Punk that we all so desperately needed.  It was love at first sight and sound.

I made the drive out to Beer City Spring Fest in Hudsonville, Michigan on Saturday May 2 to see the final Boss Mustangs show.  The fest was cool. They had a lot of breweries feature tastings of great west side brews including Dark Horse, New Holland, Vaner Mill Ciders, Mitten Brewing Co., and well, as you can imagine, a ton more (see the full list here).

The Boss Mustangs kicked things into high gear with “Turn On,” one of their signature tunes that always hook the crowd.  Mickey Catalina may be a clean technical guitarist, but he can get real down and dirty.  His heavy, powerful tone will hit you like a tsunami (check out Catalina's cover of Maggot Brain).  Michigan has some of the finest guitarists this country has to offer, and Catalina stands out as one of the best.

The original Mustangs line-up had two guitarists, but really now, who needs a second guitar player in the band when Mickey can easily do the job of two men?  He’s incredible to see live and I look forward to the projects he takes on in the future.  Front man Dan Cadillac is quite a vision on stage and has a remarkable vocal range.  He offers straight up Rock ‘n’ Roll swagger with breathtaking waves of Dickie Peterson and Jeffrey Lee Pierce. Watch  the Official Video for “Turn On.”

Moving through the set, they hit on “Burnout” which reminded me of one of the reasons why I love their live shows so much. The rhythm section. The heavy-handed bassist Hyde DeSoto joins forces with their commanding drummer Jason J .Edsel Hoover, delivering an unforgettable pulse to each and every tune.

We can thank these two Rockers for the hip shakin’ grooves that keep us locked into the unrestrained, wild sound that make The Boss Mustangs so appealing. Memorable tunes on their final set list included “Mrs. McKee,” "Hazel Holly,” "No Friend” and in the absolute true to form spirit of the band, they ended the show with a blistering cover of “KOTJ” by The MC5.

Did you hear that? THAT was the sound of my heart breaking. No more Boss Mustangs. Thanks for many years of astounding live performances that left your audiences floored and begging for more. Thanks so much for The Last Hurrah.

Post Mustangs News: Dan Cadillac is actually a superb guitarist in his own rite and has moved on to the Heavy-Psych band Imperial Sun Crusher, with larger than life bassist Hyde DeSoto. They will be coming back into SE Michigan for FuzzFest this June.

J FERNANDEZ PLAYS THE UFO BAR WEDNESDAY MAY 6TH

J Fernandez Announces Dates
With Unknown Mortal Orchestra
First Single "Read My Mind" on FADER
Debut LP 'Many Levels of Laughter' on Joyful Noise - 6.9

Listen to "Read My Mind" on FADER

Drawing inspiration from the chaos of his neighbourhood in Chicago, the colourful world and imagination of J Fernandez is captured in his debut album Many Levels of Laughter. With lyrics reflecting the profound (emotional mushroom trips), the mundane (dentist visits, board games) and life's other curiosities (sleep apnea, Craigslist encounters), it’s an album steeped in DIY origins, but offers a superior exploration of sound that’s all set to wrap J Fernandez in a far worldlier embrace.

Born to Filipino immigrant parents, J (Justin) Fernandez relocated to the Windy City from his native Little Rock, Arkansas in the early aughts to begin work for the U.S. map company Rand McNally. Spending his spare time navigating his own personal world of musical endeavours, he created three unique and accomplished early EPs Olympic Village, No Luck and Memorize Now that placed him alongside label peers Best Coast, Mount Eerie, and Dirty Beaches whilst winning him praise and comparisons to everyone from Syd Barrett, to Robyn Hitchcock and Ennio Morricone.

Many Levels… was written and recorded in the rudimentary studio in his apartment, situated above a stained glass window workshop run by his nihilistic and elderly Russian landlord in his adopted Humboldt Park neighbourhood - a setting that was filled with his collection of salvaged gear, built up over the years from scouring Craigslist ads from every city he’d visit. “In the summer there are a lot of Puerto Rican parades and festivals in the area which can make recording at home complicated,” admits Fernandez of working through frenzied interruptions via improvised EQ tinkering. “If you isolated any of the vocal tracks from the album, you’d probably hear a bit of that in there... you can probably hear the sound of my landlord working on stained glass in the background.”

Fernandez’s songwriting draws on disparate influences from Terry Riley to the annals of early electronic music, pop and psychedelia, not to mention Can, Yo La Tengo, Jim O’Rourke, Electric Prunes, James Burke’s ‘Connections’, Carl Sagan, Bas Jan Ader, the winter in Chicago, and Adderall. Listen closely to ‘Markers’, you can hear manipulated found sounds of the outside world behind looped Casio keyboards.

Elsewhere the mellow jazzy tones of ‘Filled With Joy’ recall the energy and sonic sound of 90s Argentine band Babasonicos whilst the layers of broken Moog string synthesizer on ‘Apophis’ is played backwards and perhaps hints at a sound of the future. “I dreamed I was floating out of my living room and over the freeway and blood started coming out of my mouth. I woke up and needed a root canal,” he says of ‘Holy Hesitation’.

Enlisting friends Matt Fields (saxophone) and Michael Gillilan (additional drums) to help reinforce Fernandez’s own love and expertise for creating loops, heavily built around Vox Jaguar organ, bright guitar, horns, and tape delay, Through J Fernandez’s precision in mapping a well-trodden DIY path, whether hand-printing artwork cassette tapes or packing up and hitting the road for long drives to play far away shows, what he’s created is a sound that exists well beyond its years, and pushes well beyond the outer limits.
