MATT AUSTIN - from DETROIT ROCK to DETROIT COUNTRY

In 2013 Matt Austin released the EP ‘Matt Austin' and supported acts such as
Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert, Uncle Kracker, Aaron Lewis, Josh Gracin,
Charlie Worsham, Chase Rice and Jerrod Niemann.

Matt Austin grew up in the Detroit downriver area. His father played guitar but it wasn’t until his uncle from Texas moved to Michigan that he showed any interest in music. He was inspired first by blues guitar greats such as Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix

Austin’s Detroit music history really starts with a band called Bridgewood. They had a modicum of success, opening for acts such as Vince Neil, Trapt and Sponge. Then he was invited to join a group with Charlie Grover from Sponge, and Cheyenne Goff from Bliss 66. Donnie Patty from Bliss 66 came on to play bass and Paper Street Saints was born. Paper Street Saints became one of the most notable acts in Detroit and opened for acts as large as Bon Jovi in sold out arenas.

“After all of my history playing
rock music, I have now grown
in to the artist that best fits who
I am and it shows in this record,”
 - Matt Austin
Still wanting to front his own band he formed the self-titled Matt Austin Band. He again achieved a fair amount of success, performing live on Fox 2 Detroit and opening for National Acts such as Tesla, Def Leppard and Styx. But something was missing and in the summer of 2011 Matt discovered New Country. He was transported back to the feelings he had as a young boy and was immediately hooked.

Austin has assembled a band of all stars on stage. Ken Kudsin (drums) and Tommy Furbacher (guitar) hail from Panic Trigger and Soul Circus. Their rock backgrounds bring an edge to Austin’s live show. Shance Carlisle (Bass, vocals) comes from a background of hip hop, rock and soul. He is the “fire cracker” on stage and is full of energy that comes out in his playing. Matt’s right hand man on and off stage is Kyle Palermino, on backing vocals and lead guitar. Shance and Kyle played together supporting Detroit rapper HUSH.

Along with releasing his new EP ‘Matt Austin’, 2013 found him supporting acts such as Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert, Uncle Kracker, Aaron Lewis, Josh Gracin, Charlie Worsham, Chase Rice and Jerrod Niemann.

CARJACK 'THEME 2013' VIDEO NOMINATED FOR DETROIT MUSIC AWARD BEST VIDEO

'If Egyptian Lover spawned a love child with Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn, the result would be Carjack.' - MetroTimes Detroit
With the Detroit Music Awards quickly approaching I decided to write about a lesser known category but one of my favorite acts, Carjack, whose video “Theme 2013” was nominated for Outstanding Video - Independent Budget (Under $10,000).

Why? Carjack and this video, is everything that relates to my growing up in my generation in and around Detroit. The combinations of music styles, technology, complete disregard for what others think, love for robots, kung-fu, graffiti, drum machines , skateboarding, do-it-yourself-with-what-you-have-to-work-with, RAY GUNS, distorted guitars and effects pedals… you get the idea.

'Carjack: Sounds like the Stooges played through an Atari. What's not to like?'
- MotorCityRocks.com
'THEME 2013' was recorded & performed by Lo-Fi Bri aka Carjack. Filmed and Edited by Mike Rozman. All on screen performances, skateboarding, robots & kung fu by Lo-Fi Bri (Carjack). Filmed as a two-man crew all throughout Detroit and Hamtramck Michigan. Carjack landing sequence filmed in Ferndale, MI. Dedicated to all the Graffiti Artists involved in the Detroit Beautification Project and those who choose to create music & art in the city of Detroit.

We filmed this as a two man crew with no budget what so ever and are really proud of what we created. - Carjack

Carjack is the brainchild and alter-ego of Metro Detroit musicphile and home-recording-mad-scientist Lo-Fi Bri. He’s also a successful photographer and you’ve definitely seen his work in local publications, i.e. the 2014 Metrotimes ‘Best of’ cover. Keep your eye out for the next Carjack show and best of luck to him!

MURUGA! MAY 2 AT PJ LAGER HOUSE AND NEWS!

Thanks for all your support... saw you listed him as one of the top Detroit drummers on your blog a while back... I really appreciate you getting behind Detroit music like you do and helping to make people not forget Detroit and it's music of past and present.

Muruga is also opening for Melvin Davis on May 3 but this is the show we are pushing the most as it's the bands headlining show but Spyder will also be at the Davis show which is way cool. Also, the Cosmic Hoedown Band have a new record coming out soon "Changing the Sound of Your Room" and we will all be at the Detroit Music Awards as Muruga has a couple nominations and the band was nominated for Outstanding LIve Performance which was a HUGE honor. THANKS AND BLESSINGS!
