TRIBUTE TO TOMMY FARLESS OF MUGSY BY RON PERRY

TRIBUTE FOR TOMMY FARLESS BY RON PERRY

I am heartbroken. Devastated. Part of my youth, and part of the world as I know and understand it, died today. His name was Tommy Farless. There are some people who are destined to make a mark in the world, and Tommy Farless was one of those people. Anyone who ever saw him sing has his image and his voice permanently etched into their consciousness. It was an experience no one EVER forgot, and it was an experience that left a huge, lasting impression on my life.

He never became famous or rich. Like a lot of musicians, he struggled with demons and didn't have the easiest life, but when he had a microphone in his hand, he was a king, a hero...a god. There has never been any musician that has been such a big influence, or that I have looked up to more in my life. I would give my left nut to possess the talent he had in his pinky.

With everything I have ever done in music, my main goal was just to try and be as good as Tommy Farless, although I knew that would be an impossibility. Every vocal I ever tracked, I listened back and thought "how would Tommy sing it?" and then I did what Tommy would have done. I still listen to his recordings and draw inspiration.

His voice can only be described as a cross between a sparrow and a lion. He was the fiercest, most powerful and expressive singer I ever heard, bar none. he could croon a lullaby and turn around and let out a blood curdling scream that would rattle your skull, all in perfect pitch.

To know that he is no longer here in this world shakes me to the core. I was honored to get to know him and become his friend, and although we weren't super-close, I am glad that I got the chance to let him know exactly how I felt about him. He was my hero, my idol. I loved him. I have heard it said that the greatest musicians in the world are people that you've never heard of, so ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to the greatest rock singer who ever lived...Tommy Farless.

Zappa/Bowie/King Crimson Guitar Legend Adrian Belew Announces Massive North America Tour!

Asheville, NC – Adrian Belew is an instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, producer, and guitarist, who has released 20 critically acclaimed solo albums. He has worked alongside some of the most innovative artists of the past 30 years, including Paul Simon, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Frank Zappa, Laurie Anderson and Nine Inch Nails.

For 33 years he was the frontman, singer, and guitarist in art-rock giant King Crimson. Known as a highly inventive guitarist, much of Belew's music mixes pop songwriting with complex time signatures, witty lyrics, wild sounds, and technical mastery of his instrument.

Adrian is happy to announce his first North American tour since the Crimson ProjeKCt tour of 2011. The tour runs from Oct 22 to Dec 21, coast to coast in the USA and hitting three Canadian Provinces.

The Adrian Belew Power Trio includes bassist Julie Slick and drummer Tobias Ralph, both virtuoso musicians, with a setlist celebrating Adrian’s massive body of work. Belew first appeared on the guitar-world radar when he toured with Frank Zappa who later said, “Adrian reinvented electric guitar”. Adrian’s signature tones, and his unique use of effects and whammy bar remain unique, and his techniques continue to be a huge influence on today’s guitarists.

Adrian has had a career that commands both awe and respect from fellow musicians and loyal fans. From his first solo record “The Lone Rhino” to his current endeavors, his work pushes sonic boundaries while maintaining artistic integrity. His upcoming projects include his groundbreaking music app “Flux: Music that is never the same twice” and his effects suite for iPad “FLUX:fx”. DENIZ TEK MEETS BLUE COUPE!

 Deniz Tek guest post:

DENIZ TEK PLAYS GUITAR ON BLUE COUPE'S MILLIONS MILES MORE

I was playing a show with my band a couple of years ago at Bowery Electric, just a block away from the old CBGB's. Al Bouchard, BOC drummer, showed up. After the show I joined him at the bar and we had a good time catching up. (The last time I had seen him was when Radio Birdman played in NYC in 2006)

He told me he about his band, Blue Coupe, with his brother Joe and Dennis Dunaway, the original Alice Cooper bass player. BOC and Alice were two of my favorite bands. (We named our first album Radios Appear after a BOC line from the song "Dominance and Submission")

1. Prophets Dukes and Nomads 3:32
2. Hellfire Hurry 3:47
3. Hallow's Grave 3:51
4. Everybody Goes Insane 4:04
5. I'll Forever Stick Around 3:36
6. Modern Love (Stalking Time) 4:52
7. Used Car 3:56
8. Supernatural Love 4:01
9. Train of Thought 4:00
10. Ain't Dead 3:31
11. Ride With Me 3:54
12. Devil's Highway 3:51
13. More Cowbell (Gotta Fever) 2:55

Over the years I've been inspired by and covered many of their songs. I was intrigued by the idea of "Blue Coupe". I had already heard about them from pal Andy Shernoff, who had done a few shows with them up in Canada, and was writing some material for them. Al asked if I would be willing to contribute some guitar to the next album which was to be Million Miles More. I said sure thing.

A couple of months later Al sent me audio files for the track, "Supernatural Love", a beautiful pop song written by Andy. It was right up my alley. I spent an afternoon in Bob Brown's studio recording guitar parts for it, sent it back, and some months later it showed up on the album. I was pleased and honored to get to play on an album with these icons of rock and roll, and to be a featured guest along with guys like Buck Dharma, Alice Cooper, and Ross the Boss.

These days, it's common to be recording not in the same room or same city, but often, not even in the same country as the other musicians. Sure is convenient, but not very good for comradeship or photo opportunities... so, unfortunately, there are no photos ! Deniz Tek
