Iggy Pop, an outstanding artist known for his outrageous and unpredictable stage antics, sings at the Baloise Session in Basel, Switzerland, where he was honored with a 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award.

If REVERENCE stays on the same trajectory they have been, they’re soon to become a household name for metal heads everywhere. Though they play Power, this album should appeal to lovers of everything heavy metal. Their sound covers all the bases as far as I’m concerned. Gods of War is a brilliant follow-up to an already amazing debut, and one that you need in your collection. (MyGlobalMind Rating 9/10)

The following video clip features tracks from the new album: “Battle Cry“, “Angel In Black” and the title track “Gods of War“.

Bryan Holland says: It’s been 3 long years since you have had any new music from the power metal band REVERENCE. That’s a hell of a long time to go without some OLD SCHOOL METAL. STEVE HUNTER GETS PAID: AEROSMITH/ALICE COOPER ROYALTIES TRIUMPH!

Steve Hunter

After 42 years, Guitar Player Steve Hunter is finally going to start receiving airtime performance royalties for guitar solos he played that helped make rock history!

This has come after the collection of sufficient evidence for his name to be officially connected with seven tracks that he did not get credit for when the albums were released.

At the top of the list is ‘Train Kept A Rollin’ from ‘Get Your Wings’ which was released in 1974 and although it has been common knowledge amongst many rock fans that Hunter did the opening half solos, that did not equate to any performance royalties until now.

The other six tracks are from the original Alice Cooper Groups album ‘Billion Dollar Babies’. Once again these albums were released without Hunter receiving credit for his solos on Hello Hooray, Raped and Freezin, Billion Dollar Babies, Unfinished Sweet, Generation Landslide and Sick Things.

Back in the 60’s and 70’s it was common to have musicians perform on records without getting credit, when record labels wanted to keep the fans focused on the main band or artist. There are numerous examples of this including the late Dick Wagner who also played guitar un credited on ‘Get Your Wings’ and of course the practice was well documented on ‘The Wrecking Crew’ film.

In those days things were often more informal or kept quiet, but as the digital age has grown, the documentation of who did what has become more pertinent.

These ‘ghosting’ players got paid a nominal session fee at the time, but unless their work was officially part of the album credits there could be no acknowledgement of their contributions with airplay performance collection agencies around the world. Unfortunately, the US does not pay airtime performance royalties to non featured players.

Often such contributions went unnoticed, a rhythm track here or there, but occasionally a contribution was made to a recording that in small part helped advance the career of the main artist as it went global with radio play. Peter Gabriel recently credited Hunter for coming up with the guitar parts on ‘Solsbury Hill’ in a new Daryl Easlea biography. This recording is also now paying Hunter airtime performance royalties.

‘Train kept A Rollin’ certainly helped Aerosmith move forward after it became a rock radio mainstay. It also became a part of Aerosmith’s ‘Guitar Hero’ ‘Legends Of Rock‘ video game, which sadly this performance royalty triumph does not cover.

However, any performance royalties are welcome at a time when Hunter needs it most as he is going blind with Pigmentary Glaucoma and touring is impossible without assistance.

There are many unsung heroes in rock music so it’s great to report that some justice has been done for Steve Hunter and this should give others hope.

TOSHA OWENS WINS ANOTHER DMA!

What does it mean to be a Detroit Music Award Winner? Having won my 3rd award in the last 2 years I believe I am now qualified to give an answer.

Anyone with a pulse on the planet knows that Detroit is now and has always been a mecca breeding ground for outstanding world class musicians.  If you don't agree just research any major band of yesteryear and today including all genres and you will find at least one band member that is from the Detroit area. Don't forget to include individual artists (didn't think I needed to mention that but okay) Some 25+ years ago (I don't have exact specifics) someone decided that these musicians deserved to be recognized and celebrated in their home town and thus the Detroit Music Awards was born.  I only learned of these awards about 5 years ago and was surprised to find out that the event had been around for so long.

Not only is it an event that awards musicians for doing great things in music, it is also one of the biggest networking parties of the year for musicians. I have certainly benefitted from each experience since the first time I was nominated in 2012. Since then, I have had the pleasure of working with so many wonderfully talented musicians from the area who are local and national artists.  The experiences, opportunities, and education that I have received and still going through is something you could never find in a book or classroom (although I heavily support proper education).  The greatest feeling I get from it is the amazing respect that most of us have for each other and the musical families that have been created.

I don't really say much but I wanted to share these thoughts with you.  And, on that note I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to my city, my wonderful musical relationships and to the endless support given to me by all which has allowed me to be a recipient of such an honor and  to be successful doing what I love best....spreading joy through song. I wish all of my fellow musicians here and abroad all the success in your journeys and many blessings along the way.  I only ask that you give thanks and pay it forward.  Blessings to all.

P.S. If you are in the Hamtramck area tonight, you can catch me with one of my bands 'Constant Velocity' at the Fowling Warehouse located at 3901 Christopher st from 9 to 1!  Ciao!!

TILTED AXES DETROIT: MARCH 20-22 2015

Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars Returns to Detroit…and Royal Oak?

"...Tilted Axes? It's the brainchild of Detroit native and New York experimental composer Patrick Grant, a procession of electric guitars playing compositions in public places. Grant has brought the performance, which he's staged in Germany and New York, to Detroit's Cultural Center, and returned last year for the city's 313th birthday.

This year he's back, and his choices are even more interesting, in that he's chosen to participate in larger events that perhaps match the creative spirit of his endeavor. The axes will be rocking in the Detroit area for three days this March, including March 22, at the Marche du la Nain Rouge (this iteration of Tilted Axes will become the decidedly Francophone "Haches Incliné"), adding to the insurrectionary spirit of the event. His schedule also includes the (4th Annual) Bestest Concert Ever, on March 21, at the Royal Oak Farmers Market, and something called the Equinox Procession in downtown Royal Oak on March 20..." - The Metro Times, Feb. 19, 2015

Saturday, March 21 - The 4th Annual Bestest Concert Ever
5:00-8:00 PM - Royal Oak Farmers Market
316 E 11 Mile Rd, Royal Oak, MI

There will also be some super yummy food available for purchase including Detroit BBQ, Treat Dreams and The Market Cafe. Milking It Productions will also be on hand with their famous AXL Pale Ale and BRIK Red Ale for the over 21 set. $5 admission - kids welcome
FB event page:

Sunday, March 22 - Marche du Nain Rouge
1:00-3:00 PM - Midtown Detroit

Beginning at Traffic Jam & Snug (Canfield & 2nd Ave.)
Ending at the Detroit Masonic Temple, 500 Temple St.
Procession route map: http://tinyurl.com/k4ecvlg

Supposedly, for 300 years, on the Sunday after the Vernal Equinox, Detroiters have celebrated liberation from the Nain Rouge, the fiendish embodiment of all that holds us back. Revelers dressed in costume converge at or near Cass Park and hope for better things for Detroit’s future, celebrating whatever is good and working in the city: happiness, success and freedom from the antagonism of the Nain in the new year. Unfortunately, on occasion, the Nain Rouge is able to manifest, and reveals himself to the revelers, taunting them with tales of his evil machinations and plans meant to bring the city down. Just in case, revelers are advised to come in disguise, so the Nain can’t exact revenge.

Performers include: Patrick Grant (NYC), Paula Messner, Skeeto Valdez, Howard Glazer, Rick Matle, Jeff Adams, Bob Kaufman, Chris McGorey, Dean Western, Eric Iverson, Gael Grant, James McGlinnen, John Halo (NYC), John Lovaas (Chicago), Jude Closson, Rob Knevels, Sarah Metevier (Chicago), Erik Grant, Sean Biggs, and others TBA

TILTED AXES: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars

Combining the energy of rock, the creative discipline of theater, and the experimental spirit of the downtown NYC arts scene, Tilted Axes is both a processional event, and an ensemble of mobile electric guitarists created by composer/performer Patrick Grant.

Inspired by his background in gamelan music and vanguard theater work, classically-trained post-rocker Grant conceived of Tilted Axes in 2011 as part of Make Music Winter, an event which transforms New York’s cityscape with participatory musical parades in honor of the winter solstice. Tilted Axes was a way of untethering the electric guitar from both heavy stage amps and traditional band structures, as well as bringing live music directly to its audience.

The guitarists of Tilted Axes perform original compositions written specifically for the event by Grant as well as those from the Tilted repertoire, using portable amplifiers strapped to their sides as they walk through the city streets. The outdoor procession of musicians moves along predetermined routes in selected areas, in honor of an event, landmark, or organization unique to that community.

Since its inception, Tilted Axes has evolved as a project with multiple incarnations in New York, Detroit, and Düsseldorf, Germany. In 2015 the project will manifest itself in performances in the USA, Europe, and South America.

The musical pieces themselves, with their interlocking sections, make room for many kinds of genres and grooves. A democratic approach to interpretation allows the musicians - soloists, rhythm players, and percussionists - to shine in an ensemble of uncommon textural power. Flexible in number, Tilted Axes adapts itself to the environment or occasion, and feeds on the energy of a constantly shifting audience.

Tilted Axes cuts musical pathways through the urban landscape, turning neighborhoods into sonic narratives. As a form of street theater, the ensemble brings potent, ecstatic riffs, and an element of surprise, to an unsuspecting public. Tilted Axes is always in motion; striding in, rocking out, and moving on. Above all: it rocks.

Tilted Axes: Detroit 2015 is powered by the help and support of VOX amps, KORG/USA, Discover Guitar, Peppergreen Media (ASCAP), Strange Music Inc., Candy Band, The Metro Times, McCourt’s Music Royal Oak, & The Detroit School of Rock and Pop.

DETROIT DIVA ELIZA NEALS: INTERVIEW BY JACKIE WALLACE!

Eliza Neals. B&W Photo by Mike Toumey

“When I get on stage, I completely loose it. I go with the feel of the music and the energy from the audience. I don’t think about anything, I just go with it.”

Singer / Songwriter Eliza Neals

The album cover and color photos/albums/flyer "HJN Consulting"

Eliza Neals, a Sanger not a Singer
By Jackie Wallace

This past summer at the Royal Oak, Michigan festival, Arts, Beats & Eats, I was lured into a performance by a big, bluesy, voice. The sound was electrifying and I was instantly intrigued. That voice was that of Eliza Neals and the Narcotics. They undoubtedly stopped people in their tracks and sustained the attention of a packed crowd and I immediately wanted to know more.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit Michigan, Eliza Neals has earned the respect from music fans of all genres. Neals began her music career at a very young age, singing and playing piano, and she later pursued a degree in Opera from Wayne State University. Her love for Motown coupled with her signature soulful voice led her in the direction of Blues. She has experienced the high points in her musical journey, such as when she was signed to a developmental deal with Virgin Records. As well as some lows, Virgin label changed directions, and the deal fell through. Despite what challenges she faced, Eliza continued to pursue her dreams.

Within the last two to three years, Eliza’s musical career has exploded. She has graced the covers of Detroit Magazines, and has been a multi nominee at the Detroit Music Awards, winning "Outstanding Blues/R&B Recording (album)," "Rock Songwriter,” and "Outstanding Blues Songwriter.” Eliza Neals and the Narcotics were featured as part of the “Hot 100 Live Unsigned Artists/Bands of 2014” by Music Connection Magazine.

In 2013, Eliza Neals was voted by Real Detroit Weekly readers as the “Best Blues artist/group in 2013.” Her music is played on Pandora, Discovery Channel, HBO, the list goes on. Neals, currently resides in both New York as well as Detroit. “The success did not come overnight,” explains Neals. “I have been at this for some thirteen years, writing, recording, gigging, touring and then repeat.”

Part of her success comes from surrounding herself with talented people both musically as well as business minded. Her production team includes “her man” and business partner, HJ, as well as Detroit legend, Barrett Strong, whose résumé consists of working with greats such as the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and others. In addition to co-writing on each others albums, Strong has been a mentor to Eliza and has played an active role in her career offering priceless advice and guidance.

Eliza has spent the last year working on her new album titled “Breaking and Entering.” This new album showcases the soulful elements in her voice that identify her as a “Sanger” and not just a “Singer.” Her vocals have earned her such titles as, “The Detroit Diva,” and as her fans from the south refer to her as “Northern Soul”.

The album unleashes the Detroit Diva’s sass, with catchy hooks such as “Now let me tell you ‘bout the time when I caught him with a girlfriend of mine” (Sugar Daddy). “Breaking and Entering” is a merge of retro meets new funk that will continue to appeal to her loyal blues fans as well as cross over to mainstream music, gaining the likes of a new generation.

Neals will be featured on Detroit Fox 2 News on January 30th, 2015 at 9:00am with her band, The Narcotics, to promote her performance on January 31st. The band is made up of some of Michigan’s music icons, which includes blues guitarist Howard Glazer (EL 34’s), hit producer, Mike Puwal (CannonBall Records, ICP), guest guitarist, Kenny Olson (Kid Rock), and Gabe Gonzalez (George Clinton) on drums.

Eliza Neals and the Narcotics will be kicking off the Blues Festival on Saturday, January 31st, 2015 at The New Way Bar in Ferndale, MI, at 9:00pm. The two-set show will include songs from her award winning album, “Messin’ with a Fool,” as well as a sneak peak into “Breaking and Entering.” Although the album has not been officially released, it will be available for sale that evening and can also be purchased from CD Baby and iTunes.

After kicking off the Blues Festival in Ferndale, Eliza Neals and The Narcotics will head down to Miami for their “Breaking and Entering” album release concert on February 20th, 2015 at The Will Call Venue in Miami, FL.

If the cold weather has you singing the blues, head out to The New Way Bar in Ferndale, MI on January 31st to cozy up to the sultry sound of Eliza Neals and the Narcotics.

DETROIT HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRESENTS: TILTED AXES:DETROIT 313 JULY 19!

The Detroit Historical Society presents
“TILTED AXES: DETROIT (313)”
Music for Mobile Electric Guitars

A musical procession through Midtown Detroit, a performance outside & inside of the Detroit Historical Museum, and a Grand Finale at Comerica Park in celebration of The City of Detroit’s 313th Anniversary conceived and produced by composer Patrick Grant and performed by electric guitarists and featured artists from the Detroit Metro Area

In 2011 Patrick Grant, a New York City-based composer/performer and Detroit native, created Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Guitars for the Make Music New York celebration of the first day of winter. The title of the project refers to the axial tilt of the Earth that brings about seasonal change as well as playing upon the word “axes” which is slang for one’s guitar or other musical instrument. Since then Tilted Axes has had a number of manifestations in NYC, one in Detroit in 2013 for the first day of spring, and now looks forward to European versions beginning in September.

What is Tilted Axes? It is a body of musical works that are performed as a procession by approximately 30 guitarists with portable mini-amps worn by each performer. They are accompanied by drums and percussion and are led by standard-bearers holding a banner. The ensemble, whether in NYC, Detroit, or Europe, is made up of local musicians, in this case, musicians from the greater Detroit area, who receive the music and improvisational structures that Grant creates in advance via MP3s and PDF files. They workshop and rehearse days prior to the event, customizing it and adapting it to the nature of the ensemble and to the requirements of the event and its featured performers.

JIM HARPER'S BOOK REVIEW: DETROIT: AN AMERICAN AUTOPSY BY CHARLIE LEDUFF

If you were born here, and remember when Detroit was alive. If you just moved here and are curious how it got this way.If you're from somewhere else and want to understand..I highly recommend Charlie LeDuff's "Detroit an American autopsy".

The hipsters who think "everything's great! The city's comin' back!", won't like it, but if they read it, I think they'll learn a lot. Best book I've read in a long time.

The ending gave me chills and I wept. It will stay with you for days after you finish. If you can't afford to buy it, borrow it. But I strongly recommend it. Charlie is a very talented writer and this book does NOT exploit Detroit's misery. It explains it and puts a human face on it. And like it or not, it's truth. JIM HARPER

Back in his broken hometown, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Charlie LeDuff searches the ruins of Detroit for clues to his family’s troubled past. Having led us on the way up, Detroit now seems to be leading us on the way down. Once the richest city in America, Detroit is now the nation’s poorest.

Once the vanguard of America’s machine age—mass-production, blue-collar jobs, and automobiles—Detroit is now America’s capital for unemployment, illiteracy, dropouts, and foreclosures. With the steel-eyed reportage that has become his trademark, and the righteous indignation only a native son possesses, LeDuff sets out to uncover what destroyed his city. READ MORE
